Belts

Expensive Taste is delighted to offer a small range of fabulous Stephen Collins leather belts. This season’s colours include scarlet, navy, black, white, silver, gold, beige and grey. Our favourites are the giraffe prints and mock croc leathers. Please contact us if you would like to order a belt in any of these colours - we will discuss your requirements and the various options and commission it for you.

Belts have been documented both for male and female clothing since the Bronze Age. Nowadays they do have a functional use (holding your trousers up) but are mostly about decoration.

Belts are a perfect way to add colour, texture or bling to an outfit. They can lift an outfit from good to fantastic. For a woman, the belt traditionally was worn to emphasise femininity by drawing attention to a tiny waist. These days, the waist-line can shift up or down from under the bust line, to the natural waist or down as far as the hips.

Expensive Taste tips on how to wear a belt

  • A wide belt worn around your natural waist emphasises and slims the narrowest part of your body and accentuates your sexy curves. Make sure it is comfortable, so made of a material that gives if you want to sit down or bend during the day! Soft Nappa leather and stretchy materials work best.
  • Skinny belts are for dainty clothes. They are so discreet that you can do bright colours or metallics without overwhelming the outfit. Proportion is key - if you are petite the skinny belt can be very narrow - for the more voluptuous amongst us, a medium width belt will give a better skinny-belt effect.
  • The empire look is very ‘in’ and emphasises the bosom. Belts worn just under the bustline should be simple and thin. Patent leather, animal prints, suede and of course metallics work beautifully. The belt will slide down your body to your narrower waist so you will need to sew discreet loops into the side seams of the dress to keep it up.
  • Hip belts are ideal to bring the eye of the beholder down to your womanly, curvy hips. This is a casual look, so not for the office, maybe. Wear them on low-rise jeans, boho skirts, the casual shift dress and long tops and tunics worn untucked. Be adventurous with colour and texture to create flair and panache.
  • Ideas for wearing belts:

  • At waist level with high-waisted trousers, over a simple shift dress or a pencil skirt.
  • At waist level over light layers to bring together separates. Both thick and thin belts will work.
  • A textured belt worn over a day dress with a textured gives definition and polish - medium and thick belts work best.
  • Add a patent leather, metallic or studded belt to a sheath dress to bring out your inner vamp.
