This week I went though my dressing table – where I
keep my jewellery box, my make–up, hair styling paraphernalia and products,
facial products, nail and manicure equipment etc. It was deeply satisfying and
left me feeling relaxed with a sense of achievement – I recommend it – except,
of course, if you are a very tidy person whose belongings are always in perfect
order – you don’t need this advice but will still love our jewellery organisers.
The jewellery box was a bit of a mess. Knots in chains, clasps missing, single earrings, broken beads. Also, some pieces I haven't worn in ages and some I had forgotten I owned.
| We feel that the future of handbags is
individualised bags, interesting materials and a personal style statement,
rather than carrying a brand for the brand’s sake. |
| ACTIONS: |
| |
Single earrings have found a new job as pins and are now stuck into my cork notice board – pretty and quirky. |
| |
Broken jewellery to be repaired – all in separate ziplock bags (I save them) and in a small box in the car waiting till I pass the local jeweller's shop. |
| |
Broken jewellery of no value has gone into the bin. |
| |
Broken gold and silver bits too far gone for repair or no longer wanted are going to a local market stall holder who says he buys it. |
INVESTMENTS:
Treated myself to a necklace & bracelet stand and an earring stand from the Expensive Taste new stock to keep my favourite pieces undamaged, easy to see and easy to find. |
| The belt drawer was surprisingly well–organised. Belts should always be hung up
in a cupboard to fall straight or curled round if left in a drawer. Keep free
from dust (we supply dust bags with belts from Expensive Taste). |
| I read up on jewellery and leather care and picked up a few interesting tips: |
| |
One denture tablet in a glass of water perks diamonds up no end. Just leave in
for a few minutes and then rinse.
| |
Alka–Seltzer is also a good jewellery cleaner. If jewellery is precious, do not
take chances, go to a professional to get it cleaned. Some stones such as opals
and pearls are porous.
| |
Keep pieces of jewellery separate – if they are all heaped together you risk
scratching and denting your collection.
| |
Take rings and bracelets off when washing up or cleaning and do not wear
anything in the bath or shower.
| |
Put jewellery on last when you are getting dressed to protect it from lotions
and potions which can tarnish the metal.
| |
Use a leather protector spray when you first buy a belt to protect from stains
and moisture.
| |
Store shoes in a shoe box – either keep the original box or invest in some. Our Lisbeth Dahl clear
Perspex shoe boxes
are perfect – in a set of two with ventilation holes and a pretty rose
embellishment, one is larger than the other to cater for high heels.
| |
Handbags should also be protected from dust.
| |
A few drops of baby oil applied with a soft cloth then wiped off is excellent
for bringing a shine to leather handbags and patent shoes.
| |
Swarovski crystals should be kept in the dark.
| At the end of the sort out I treated myself to a new necklace (to hang on my new stand) and one of these glamorous manicure sets – just for being a good girl! |
